Fabricating Antiquity

A recent auction at Wright unearthed Harry Bertoia’s ‘bush series’ in which welded iron, coated in bronze, is crafted into a painstaking feat of sculptural pointillism. The value of the rich emerald patina afforded by the work’s bronze coating is rooted in ancient Greek tradition–bronze sculptors would often achieve patination by treating metal with acids.
